Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church) Colleges
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (abbreviated as the LDS Church, and also referred to as the Mormon Church) is the largest denomination originating from the Latter Day Saint movement founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr. Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, the LDS Church has established congregations throughout the world. The LDS Church claims its global membership is roughly 13 million, 6 million of whom reside in the United States. Members (usually referred to as Latter-day Saints, LDS, or Mormons) consider themselves part of Christianity, as LDS Church theology does include Christian doctrine, though LDS Church theology is also different from traditional Christianity in a many ways. LDS is an active proselytizing church, continually sending full-time missionaries throughout the world.
Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church) Higher Education Overview
Latter-day Saints maintains Brigham Young University (BYU), Brigham Young University–Idaho (formerly Ricks College), Brigham Young University Hawaii, and LDS Business College. The largest school, by far, is the main campus of Brigham Young, located in Provo, Utah. Its student enrollment exceeds 34,000 students. Originally established in 1875 as the Brigham Young Academy, the name was changed to Brigham Young University in 1903. This campus offers doctoral and professional degrees, and has been recognized nationally for its business and law programs.
