Wesleyan Colleges


The Wesleyan Church, a Holiness Methodist Christian denomination in the United States, has over 400,000 members in more than 5,000 churches globally. The original group split from the Methodist Episcopal Church and in 1843 with its teachings rooted in the John Wesley tradition. Wesleyan Methodists have long been proponents of equal rights, exemplified by their anti-slavery preaching in the mid-1800’s to championing the women’s suffrage movement. The Wesleyan Church maintains its world headquarters in Fishers, Indiana.

Wesleyan Higher Education Overview

Institutions of higher learning affiliated with the Wesleyan Church are located primarily along the eastern seaboard, with the exception of Oklahoma Wesleyan University (Bartlesville, OK), and the largest, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU). Located in Marion, IN, and founded in 1920 as Marion College, Indiana Wesleyan University adopted its current name in 1987. IWU offers several academic degrees as well as professional educational programs, including a doctoral program. Its academic units are organized by the following colleges: Adult and Professional Studies; Arts and Sciences; and Graduate Studies.
