Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod Colleges
Rooted in the Lutheran tradition of Christianity, the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) is a North American religious denomination. Characterized as theologically conservative, WELS was founded in 1850 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. With global membership nearing 400,000 and more than 1,200 congregations, WELS is the third largest Lutheran denomination in the United States. WELS is a member of the Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference (CELC), a worldwide organization of Lutheran church bodies.

Within the United States, the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod is affiliated with several schools, two of which are institutions of higher learning. Martin Luther College, in New Ulm, Minnesota, is a pre-seminary and teacher training college conferring undergraduate and post graduate degrees. The second, Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, (WLC) is located in Mequon, Wisconsin, and was founded in 1973. WLC is a liberal arts college offering degrees across various disciplines including communicative arts, political science, business administration, and social sciences.
